The project assessed the vulnerability of communities and infrastructure to natural hazards, determine their degree of exposure to future hazardous events, and develop risk reduction recommendations to be integrated into development planning processes. The assessment will help to generate baselines for DRR programming in pilot provinces. The project is part of Australia Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade-supported project on “Strengthening Disaster Risk Management in Papua New Guinea”, aimed at providing strategic support to the Government of Papua New Guinea in reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience to disasters.

Location: PNG (Provinces: Western Highlands, Chimbu, Madang, Central Province, Autonomous Region of Bougainville)
Key activities included: development of methodology for hazard and vulnerability assessments; hazard assessment; assessment of vulnerability of populations and community assets and livelihoods; risk assessment and profiling; development of DRR plans for the pilot provinces; capacity building of National Disaster Center and technical agencies.

The project aims to establish 4 real-time sea-level stations in Myanmar (1), the Philippines (1), and Vietnam (2) for monitoring earthquakes, for tsunami early warnings. Key activities include site survey to determine location appropriate for tsunami warning, design and construction of seismic vaults, equipment acquisition, and on-site installation, telemetry, and reliability testing.
